The big night is over and the list is in. The Roca brothers and their El Celler De Can Roca restaurant in Girona (Spain) now sit at number one on The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list for 2013, an event sponsored by S.Pellegrino and Acqua Panna. René Redzepi from Noma in Copenhagen is now down to second place and Massimo Bottura from the Osteria Francescana restaurant in Italy up to third position.

It was a night enjoyed by some of the culinary profession’s biggest players, the regulars who make the list every year and the face of a number of new entries – Piazza Duomo in Italy, the Central restaurant in Peru, Septime in France and Mani in Brazil to name just a few.

There was the obvious Asian effect as many of the restaurant highlighted through Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List made it onto the world list and the crowd erupted at the news of likable chef Gaston Acurio and his Astrid Y Gaston restaurant in Peru rising 21 places to take the highest climber award. It was The Attica restaurant in Melbourne that claimed the highest new entry ranking 21.

The USA and France came out as the countries with the most venues on the list – each with six. They were closely followed by Spain with 5 and Italy with 4. All together there were 29 restaurants from Europe, 6 from South America, 6 in the USA, 7 from Asia and 2 from Australia.
