A sweet Music Video Clip by Katy Perry

She had her cake and ate it, too!

When coming up with a lyric video concept for her new single “Birthday,” Katy Perry and her crew had some pretty sweet ideas. So they tapped the Ace of Cakes himself, Duff Goldman, to help them create a saccharine clip shot at his Cakemix Bakery & DIY Decorating Studio in L.A., featuring treats of all shapes and sizes.

After getting the call, Goldman and his team of 12 created a variety of sketches to show the video’s director, then got to work baking and decorating, with less than one week to get the job done. “We got a lot of direction from Katy’s team,” Goldman tells PEOPLE, adding that the bakers followed a shot list that included requests for a suit-like cake, a hamburger cake, a cat cake and more, though had “free rein” with some sweets, like the rainbow cake.

On the day of the shoot, Perry popped up, sampling some candy before getting to work. Sadly, Goldman missed her — “We had a delivery in Malibu so I bit the bullet, did the delivery and let my staff hang out and meet Katy, even though I was bummed,” he says — but spent most of the day with the singer’s crew.

“It was a real collaboration,” he says. “The Cakemix staff was working with the producer and director, who would say, ‘We need this lyric written out in frosting,’ or, ‘Can we get this done with food coloring?’ It was a really intense affair, putting it all together, but really cool — it made us feel like a part of what they were doing.”

So the big question: Once the cameras stopped rolling, what happened to the sweets? “The camera guys, sound guys, production guys took those home,” Goldman says. “I’m sure there are photos of them all at home with their families eating Katy Perry cakes!” (For her hard work, Perry was gifted with glittery pink cupcakes that spelled out her name).
